MetaMask is the most widely used free wallet that works with Ethereum-based blockchains. It is accessible as a browser extension on your computer, and as an app on iOS and Android devices. The step-by-step instructions below will guide you through creating your own MetaMask wallet.
Go to https://metamask.io and click the “Download” button.
Choose the device you are installing it on and then click the “Install” button below it.
If installing on iOS or Android, install the app from the app store like normal. To install on Chrome you will be taken to the Chrome Web Store. Install it by clicking on “Add to Chrome”.
Chrome will pop up an installation dialog. Click on “Add extension”.
A new page will open, click the “Terms of Use” checkbox and then click on “Create a new wallet”.
You will then be asked to allow Metamask to collect anonymous usage data from the add on. You can click on “I agree”, or “No thanks” if you don’t want them to.
Enter a new strong password to protect your wallet, and click the checkbox showing that you understand that if you lose your wallet, Metamask will not be able to help you recover it. Then click on “Create a new wallet”.
Metamask will now show you a short video explaining what a Recovery Phrase is and why it’s important. It’s recommended to make multiple backups of your Recovery Phrase in safe places. Just like any password you will need to keep it secret. With the Recovery Phrase anyone can access and take from your wallet. Click on “Secure my wallet” to view the Recovery Phrase.
On the next step click the button to reveal your Recovery Phrase, and then write it down in a safe location no one else has access to. Once you’ve recorded the phrase, click “Next”.
On this page you will need to fill in the missing Recovery Phrase words, this is done to make sure you really did save them somewhere. Enter the missing words, and then click Confirm.
Read this page and then click on “Got it!” to finish your wallet creation.
The last two pages show you how to ‘pin’ the MetaMask app to your Chrome window. Follow those directions and you’re done!
You can open your wallet at any time by clicking on the MetaMask Fox icon in Chrome.
Follow the instructions here.
